Sketching

When completing sketches for my logo, I created this sketch which was an attempt at a floral motif using the brand’s logo. While I felt it wasn’t jus as successful as a logo, I thought it could work really well in some brand assets / illustrations.

The ‘Flower of Life’

Taking inspiration from the six-pointed ‘star of life’ motif, this could be named the ‘flower of life’, to symbolise the growth a digitally-led approach to emergency care will foster in a service, looking towards a re-imagined service where staff can thrive and blossom in their role.

I think this is a very impactful sentiment which is very suitable for the brand. I completed a sketch of the ways in which I could present this, looking at creating a pattern with this motif.

Digital Development

After finalising the sketches, I moved on to the digital development of the motifs. This involved vectorising the sketches and refining them digitally. I experimented with different colour palettes and gradients to see which best represented the brand. I also tried adding some more interest to the vectors, such as an outline to the centre of the flower. I went slightly off palette in these illustrations, using #FFFFFF white for my illustrations. I felt that this was added a nice sense of brightness to each illustration it was applied to.

<aside> ⭐ REFLECTION: I feel quite torn between the flat colour ways (1, 13 & 14,) and the gradient colour ways (11 & 12). I think both are effective in their own ways. Some times I shy away from gradients in my design as it can be a very difficult thing to do appropriately. However, in this case I feel it adds a really nice sense of dimension to the illustration. At this point, I am still quite undecided so I will decide by applying them both to a pattern or other outcome.
