In class we were asked to analyse the font we had chosen in order to gain a good understanding of it so we can then create word marks. It was really interesting breaking down each character into such detail to truly gain an understanding of what I was working with.
I am very happy with the font I have chosen and I think it is visually very strong already. It has great flow and character which I am reluctant to disrupt. I kerned the letters slightly tighter to start just to make the word mark feel more self contained. I experimented with both solid letters and outlines to see what way the font would look if I ever needed to create an outline logo.
I knew I wanted to present the name with a line to mimic the linear interface of setting saving goals that I intend to create. By dividing the line up equally, it also conveys this sense of balance and equity. I intend to use colour when I have chosen the colour scheme for my brand but as of now I am using greyscale. It is also good to see this would be visually strong in black and white.
To develop this further, after speaking with my tutor I experimented with creating a sense of balancing between the line and the name. I tried many iterations of this. The first five were mainly idea generative, but I also think graphics such as these could be very effective in a marketing visual sense so I will definitely keep these on the back burner. I also experimented with changing the kerning in each visual.
Although I liked the playfulness of these graphics, for the word mark I want something that feels a bit more boxed off and well rounded. I tilted the line below the name to imbue this sense of balance. The diagonal sense reminds me of a see-saw or a set of balance scales. All of these connotations can be used in later visuals I want to create but for now I think that it is a very strong word mark. The third iteration reintroduces the division of the line with colour. In the fourth design I split the line in half which I think is the most effective iteration. I think this is my favourite but I don’t want to finalise this until I have my interface fully realised.
Based on this word mark, I created a logo mark which I could use in an app icon or as an initial. I think this works really well and I feel as though I am starting to realise a strong design system.
I refined each design to have some logic in terms of the size of the line. It is the exact width of the stem of the ‘b’ in the word mark and half of the width of the stem in the initial. Both lines are also at a 5 degree tilt.
