Turning my attention to type faces, I wanted to create a mood board of contemporary examples of type at the time of the Apollo mission or close to it. I want to imbue this prototype with authenticity which is why I would like to select a type face that feels directly relevant to the content supplied.
I began by investigating NASA literature which were involved in the Apollo missions. I captured a range of documents from flight plans to press passes. The two fonts that reoccured throughout this mood board were Futura and Helvetica. These are two versatile fonts which definitely are good options for the final prototype.
NASA Literature Mind Map
I wanted to gain a further understanding of the more typographical elements produced by NASA. One prominent aspect of design associated with the Apollo 11 mission is the plaque which they left on the moon. It is interesting to see the hierarchy, choice of copy, the two earth faces and the general composition of this plaque. It is set in Futura which seems a very appropriate font for this.
Assessing the media surrounding the Apollo 11 missions, there was a clear stylistic theme in the type faces used at this time. They all share a common large x-height, sans serif and impactful nature. I’m not sure if I want to lean into the media in the design of my prototype as it feels a bit tacky in my opinion.
<aside> ⭐ REFLECTION: Despite not wanting to take direct aesthetic inspiration from the media of this time, I do want to investigate further the impactful typography in these graphics and apply similar principles to my own typographic design. Dealing with such a large amount of text content, it seems necessary to have a focus on typography.
