The thought of writing a case study intimidated me slightly at the beginning of the portfolio process. How was I supposed to summarise months of work onto a webpage? What parts are relevant? I decided to begin with what is necessary in a case study.

Structure of a Case Study

  1. Overview
  2. Problem statement
  3. Users and audience
  4. Roles and responsibilities
  5. Scope and constraints
  6. Process and what you did
  7. Outcomes and lessons

I created essay plan tables for my project case studies based on this structure:

FUSE - DATING APP SMART WATCH UI

OVERVIEW A smart watch UI focused on combating the unethical, frictionless design of current dating app UI’s. Focus on bringing users attentions away from screens and trying to create more natural, real world experiences
PROBLEM STATEMENT Tasked with creating a smart watch UI.
USERS AND AUDIENCE Began looking at Gen-Z and technology addiction. This led me to looking at the wider causes of technology addiction, one major factor being unethical design. This led me to the wider audience of single people who use unethically designed dating apps.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES n/a
SCOPE AND CONSTRAINTS A very short project - only 2/3 weeks. This was a new way of working for me. Small screen - never designed for an apple watch before.
PROCESS Include user surveys, story boarding, sketching, paper prototype, wireframes and final prototype.
OUTCOMES AND LESSONS Was particularly pleased with the aspects of branding. Overcame a big challenge of designing for a technology I had never used before.

BALANCE - BANKING BRAND

OVERVIEW A banking brand aimed at 16-25 year olds. A mission of making young people more responsible with money, encouraging saving for long term. Making it easier for young people to save.
PROBLEM STATEMENT Tasked with creating a banking brand for 16-25 year olds, including a brand guidelines document, a landing page and an application of the brand to a smart phone app.
USERS AND AUDIENCE Users are intended to be 16-25 year olds, although usable for anyone.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES n/a
SCOPE AND CONSTRAINTS Having to familiarise myself with the branding process - something I had never done before.
PROCESS Include user surveys, sketching, paper prototype, wireframes and final prototypes.
OUTCOMES AND LESSONS Was really pleased with the finished product and I felt it was something that would definitely capture the interest of young people, especially the ‘balance’ feature to help young people save.
