The Brief

The final brief of the semester given to us was to ‘come up with an idea for a product / service and do an investor pitch. I felt confident going into this brief as I consider myself as someone who is good at coming up with ideas. Initially I felt it was important to start with a problem and design from there. I set my sights on exploring current issues facing the world today.

Finding a Problem to Solve

I began casting my net wide and looking at some current issues facing the globe today. There was definitely some scope in this mind map, especially around health care. However, I was very aware of the fact that I had a limited time scale to complete this project in which is why I didn’t want to take on anything too ambitious.

I decided to look more locally in my search by assessing some issues facing the country. Some interesting topics came up here too, such as immigration and asylum and the issues around providing them jobs and housing. The points around poor quality rentals and how it affects the wellbeing of tenants was also a very interesting point.

I made my ideation even more specific by exploring issues facing me. I feel like designing around problems which face me could be a smart move as then I have a level of vested interest in the product and can assume the role of a user profile easier.

<aside> ⭐ REFLECTION: I really liked the idea of exploring an app concerned with dietary requirements. This is something that affects my life daily and is also something I would like to try and make living with easier through my design. I also feel already quite knowledgeable on this subject area which will make solving this problem through design even more enjoyable and meaningful.
