Running with the name balance for now, I wanted to begin researching possible typefaces I could use for my project having completed an interesting lecture on it this week. I already predetermined that I would like a sans-serif typeface as I think this is the most suitable category for a banking brand. However, considering the target demographic, I would like a sans-serif that feels a bit softer and friendly while also maintaining an aspect of professionalism required for banking. I used Adobe Fonts to grab some typefaces that could be effective.
I found this typeface to be a good starting point for my discovery. The name ‘balance’ is very effective and looks well in a sans-serif as it highlights the repetition of the counters both closed and open which is visible in 5 of the letters. I’m not sure how well italicised fonts would work as it counter acts the notion of ‘balance’ in my opinion when it is leaning to one side. I feel that this font is too generalised and doesn’t particularly inspire me. That said, it could be a good font to use for body text in the interface.
I think the dramatic ascender height in this font is very effective and engaging. I think this could contribute to very slick and modern branding. It was quite different to the font I had in mind for this project as I feel it isn’t overly friendly or playful. However, I don’t think it’s particularly frozen in tone either. I like the strong graphic qualities.
This is my favourite typeface. I really like the interesting contrasting strokes at the terminal. The equal height of the cap height and the ascender height is very aesthetically pleasing. The contrast between these heights and the x-height is very subtle which makes it feel rather friendly which is what I am looking for. The way in which the ‘a’ character has a curved spine further likens it to the strong curvature of the other letters. I think this typeface would be great for a logo. I’m not sure how well it would lend itself to body text.
I think this typeface is graphically very strong and would also make a great logo. It strikes a nice balance between professional and friendly.
