Diverge/Converge

“Diverge to create choices then converge to make choices.” This theory I feel will help me in my practice. It will combat my bad habit of settling on a path too quickly before exploring all possible options which I found being a recurring downfall in my foundation studies.

Diverge and Converge in Developing Outcomes

The theory is as follows:

  1. Discover. This is perhaps the most exciting part of the project as this is when one can actively seek out problems to solve and inspirations.
  2. Define. This stage of design allows us to view our research and explorations to settle on a distinct design or problem to solve.
  3. Develop. We then diverge again to try and push our ideas to their furthest extent to achieve fully realised outcomes. We can also look to outside inspirations and other design practitioners for inspiration at this stage.
  4. Deliver. This final convergence is when we test and select the most successful outcomes in response to the initial problem or design idea we converged in the first diamond.
