The Art of Sketching Interfaces

In the world of design, sketching interfaces emerges as an invaluable tool. It facilitates rapid iteration, allowing designers to quickly visualise and modify their ideas. Moreover, sketching interfaces is cost-effective, eliminating the need for expensive software or high-tech equipment and is more flexible and faster than Photoshop, Figma, XD etc.

We sketch to think and it allows us to visualise our ideas. Furthermore, we sketch in order to communicate our ideas with others. Sketching is a short hand visual language.

Enables Collaboration

The collaborative nature of sketching interfaces also makes it an integral part of the design process. It allows for a free exchange of ideas, enhancing the collaborative spirit amongst the design team. Initial sketches are not prototypes; they serve as a springboard for ideas and discussions.

Sketching is Fast Thinking

An essential aspect of sketching interfaces is that it aids in thinking and communication. Sketching is key in the diverging stage of a design sprint, as it enables low fidelity and lots of outputs. As a design team begins to converge, these outputs become fewer and begin to be digitalised.

While sketching interfaces, it's important to remember that the focus should be on being a good thinker, not necessarily a good artist. The ability to think creatively and problem-solve is far more important than artistic skills in the design process. Low fidelity sketches can provide a solid foundation for high fidelity sketches, making the transition smoother and more efficient.

I love how malleable this form of ideation is, were you can just focus on creating effective design without worrying about the constraints of the programme you are using to design or build the prototype. This lecture has reminded me on the importance of this practice in the development of ideas. Perhaps there is some risk in this module of this practice being pushed to the side as it is so UX focused rather than UI focused. However, it is important to allocate a significant amount of time to sketch to ensure the outcome is as strong as possible.

Class Task: Sketching Interfaces

As part of the lecture, we were presented with three different interfaces, a desktop interface, a phone interface and a smart watch interface. We were asked to complete sketches of these under time constraints. The outcomes are below.

The Basic Elements of Sketching

When you reduce the process of sketching down, particularly in the context of design, anything can be sketched using these 5 basic elements:

Using the right tools and methods can significantly enhance the sketching process. A thicker pen can help to draw straight lines and timing yourself can improve speed and efficiency. If in doubt, it's advisable to reduce fidelity.
