Typography is something that really interests me. Admittedly, I find it difficult in my design practice. I therefore really enjoy any opportunity I have to learn more of the history and gain more inspiration on the subject area. This period we discussed in many ways was the genesis of typography, at least in the way we practice it in the modern era. A key focus in this era was legibility and the designs that emerged conveyed a clear message in a straightforward manner. These were sometimes accompanied by graphics which also were extremely simple and graphic in quality. There were key designers that championed this movement. Josef Muller-Brockmann was one of these designers. I researched some more of his work in my spare time and I think his work is so ahead of his time. I love the minimalist qualities of some of his work, using plane to create interesting graphic imagery. Paring everything down to such an extent is something I find hard, especially when it comes to typography. Therefore it is really informative to see designers doing it with such mastery so many years ago. There is definitely lessons and pointers to be observed from this era.
