It has been really interesting this week to observe the shift from modernism which was covered in an earlier lecture, to postmodernism. It really reinforces the idea that a new movement often is in reaction to a previous one. This style was a highly experimental one, especially in the graphic design fields. Weingart is synonymous with the design style. His work really pushed the boundaries, especially in the typography realm when we consider the previous intentional style which he was trained through. I love the abstractive elements in this era. The works are highly interesting and shift the interpretation to the viewer. I think this is an era when graphic design took on a whole new existence. It is easy to liken these designs to the fine art world in terms of their complex narratives. It was highly controversial to say the least. Previously, functionality was at the forefront of the minds of post war designers. It was highly daring of the postmodernists to go against such a clear set of parameters and create designs that critics viewed as non-sensible. Style became a clear focus of these designers, especially over practicality or legibility. It is said that it grew in popularity to the point that it became too successful to be sustainable.
